Population and Housing Profile:  Baltimore city, Maryland

POPULATION OF Baltimore city: In 2003, Baltimore city had a household population of 603,000 - 327,000 (54 percent) females and 276,000 (46 percent) males. The median age was 35.6 years. Twenty-five percent of the population were under 18 years and 12 percent were 65 years and older.

For people reporting one race, 31 percent were White alone; 66 percent were Black or African American; less than 0.5 percent were American Indian and Alaska Native; 2 percent were Asian; less than 0.5 percent were Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander, and 1 percent were Some other race. One percent reported Two or more races. Two percent of the people in Baltimore city were Hispanic. Thirty percent of the people in Baltimore city were White non-Hispanic. People of Hispanic origin may be of any race.

HOUSEHOLDS AND FAMILIES: In 2003 there were 246,000 households in Baltimore city. The average household size was 2.45 people.

Families made up 57 percent of the households in Baltimore city that year. This figure includes both married-couple families (26 percent) and other families (30 percent). Nonfamily households made up 43 percent of all households in Baltimore city. Most of the nonfamily households were people living alone, but some were comprised of people living in households in which no one was related to the householder.

NATIVITY AND LANGUAGE: Five percent of the people living in Baltimore city in 2003 were foreign born. Ninety-five percent were native, including 73 percent who were born in Maryland.

Among people at least five years old living in Baltimore city in 2003, 7 percent spoke a language other than English at home. Of those speaking a language other than English at home, 28 percent spoke Spanish and 72 percent spoke some other language; 39 percent reported that they did not speak English "very well."

GEOGRAPHIC MOBILITY: In 2003, 82 percent of the people at least one year old living in Baltimore city were living in the same residence one year earlier; 11 percent had moved during the past year from another residence in the same county, 3 percent from another county in the same state, 3 percent from another state, and 1 percent from abroad.

EDUCATION: In 2003, 76 percent of people 25 years and over had at least graduated from high school and 24 percent had a bachelor's degree or higher. Among people 16 to 19 years old, 12 percent were dropouts; they were not enrolled in school and had not graduated from high school.

The total school enrollment in Baltimore city was 160,000 in 2003. Preprimary school enrollment was 17,000 and elementary or high school enrollment was 103,000 children. College enrollment was 40,000.

DISABILITY: In Baltimore city, among people at least five years old in 2003, 22 percent reported a disability. The likelihood of having a disability varied by age - from 13 percent of people 5 to 20 years old, to 18 percent of people 21 to 64 years old, and to 53 percent of those 65 and older.

INDUSTRIES: In 2003, for the employed population 16 years and older, the leading industries in Baltimore city were Educational, health, and social services, 24 percent, and Professional and business services, 13 percent.

OCCUPATIONS AND TYPE OF EMPLOYER: Among the most common occupations were: Management, professional, and related occupations, 36 percent; Sales and office occupations, 25 percent; Service occupations, 21 percent; Production, transportation, and material moving occupations, 12 percent; and Construction, extraction, and maintenance occupations, 5 percent. Seventy-three percent of the people employed were Private wage and salary workers; 22 percent were Federal, state, or local government workers; and 5 percent were Self-employed.

TRAVEL TO WORK: Sixty percent of Baltimore city workers drove to work alone in 2003, 12 percent carpooled, 18 percent took public transportation, and 8 percent used other means. The remaining 2 percent worked at home. Among those who commuted to work, it took them on average 29 minutes to get to work.

INCOME: The median income of households in Baltimore city was $32,452. Seventy-seven percent of the households received earnings and 17 percent received retirement income other than Social Security. Twenty-seven percent of the households received Social Security. The average income from Social Security was $10,579. These income sources are not mutually exclusive; that is, some households received income from more than one source.

POVERTY AND PARTICIPATION IN GOVERNMENT PROGRAMS: In 2003, 21 percent of people were in poverty. Twenty-seven percent of related children under 18 were below the poverty level, compared with 18 percent of people 65 years old and over. Seventeen percent of all families and 27 percent of families with a female householder and no husband present had incomes below the poverty level.

HOUSING CHARACTERISTICS: In 2003, Baltimore city had a total of 294,000 housing units, 16.4 percent of which were vacant. Of the total housing units, 67 percent were in single-unit structures, 33 percent were in multi-unit structures, and less than 0.5 percent were mobile homes. Four percent of the housing units were built since 1990.

OCCUPIED HOUSING UNIT CHARACTERISTICS: In 2003, Baltimore city had 246,000 occupied housing units - 135,000 (55 percent) owner occupied and 111,000 (45 percent) renter occupied. Seven percent of the households did not have telephone service and 31 percent of the households did not have access to a car, truck, or van for private use. Twenty-one percent had two vehicles and another 8 percent had three or more.

HOUSING COSTS: The median monthly housing costs for (specified) mortgaged owners was $929, (specified) nonmortgaged owners $323, and (specified) renters $602. Thirty-five percent of owners with mortgages, 23 percent of owners without mortgages, and 47 percent of renters in Baltimore city spent 30 percent or more of household income on housing.

HOUSEHOLDS AND FAMILIES: In 2003 there were 303,000 households in Baltimore County. The average household size was 2.5 people.

Families made up 65 percent of the households in Baltimore County that year. This figure includes both married-couple families (48 percent) and other families (17 percent). Nonfamily households made up 35 percent of all households in Baltimore County. Most of the nonfamily households were people living alone, but some were comprised of people living in households in which no one was related to the householder.

NATIVITY AND LANGUAGE: Eight percent of the people living in Baltimore County in 2003 were foreign born. Ninety-two percent were native, including 72 percent who were born in Maryland.

Among people at least five years old living in Baltimore County in 2003, 10 percent spoke a language other than English at home. Of those speaking a language other than English at home, 18 percent spoke Spanish and 82 percent spoke some other language; 38 percent reported that they did not speak English "very well."

GEOGRAPHIC MOBILITY: In 2003, 87 percent of the people at least one year old living in Baltimore County were living in the same residence one year earlier; 5 percent had moved during the past year from another residence in the same county, 6 percent from another county in the same state, 1 percent from another state, and less than 0.5 percent from abroad.

EDUCATION: In 2003, 88 percent of people 25 years and over had at least graduated from high school and 36 percent had a bachelor's degree or higher. Among people 16 to 19 years old, 7 percent were dropouts; they were not enrolled in school and had not graduated from high school.

The total school enrollment in Baltimore County was 191,000 in 2003. Preprimary school enrollment was 16,000 and elementary or high school enrollment was 121,000 children. College enrollment was 53,000.

DISABILITY: In Baltimore County, among people at least five years old in 2003, 13 percent reported a disability. The likelihood of having a disability varied by age - from 6 percent of people 5 to 20 years old, to 10 percent of people 21 to 64 years old, and to 35 percent of those 65 and older.

INDUSTRIES: In 2003, for the employed population 16 years and older, the leading industries in Baltimore County were Educational, health, and social services, 27 percent, and Retail trade, 11 percent.

OCCUPATIONS AND TYPE OF EMPLOYER: Among the most common occupations were: Management, professional, and related occupations, 42 percent; Sales and office occupations, 27 percent; Service occupations, 15 percent; Production, transportation, and material moving occupations, 8 percent; and Construction, extraction, and maintenance occupations, 8 percent. Seventy-six percent of the people employed were Private wage and salary workers; 19 percent were Federal, state, or local government workers; and 5 percent were Self-employed.

TRAVEL TO WORK: Eighty-one percent of Baltimore County workers drove to work alone in 2003, 9 percent carpooled, 4 percent took public transportation, and 3 percent used other means. The remaining 3 percent worked at home. Among those who commuted to work, it took them on average 26 minutes to get to work.

INCOME: The median income of households in Baltimore County was $52,216. Eighty-three percent of the households received earnings and 20 percent received retirement income other than Social Security. Twenty-eight percent of the households received Social Security. The average income from Social Security was $13,615. These income sources are not mutually exclusive; that is, some households received income from more than one source.

POVERTY AND PARTICIPATION IN GOVERNMENT PROGRAMS: In 2003, 7 percent of people were in poverty. Eight percent of related children under 18 were below the poverty level, compared with 7 percent of people 65 years old and over. Five percent of all families and 20 percent of families with a female householder and no husband present had incomes below the poverty level.

HOUSING CHARACTERISTICS: In 2003, Baltimore County had a total of 321,000 housing units, 5.5 percent of which were vacant. Of the total housing units, 71 percent were in single-unit structures, 28 percent were in multi-unit structures, and 1 percent were mobile homes. Seventeen percent of the housing units were built since 1990.

OCCUPIED HOUSING UNIT CHARACTERISTICS: In 2003, Baltimore County had 303,000 occupied housing units - 205,000 (68 percent) owner occupied and 98,000 (32 percent) renter occupied. Two percent of the households did not have telephone service and 7 percent of the households did not have access to a car, truck, or van for private use. Multi-vehicle households were not rare. Forty percent had two vehicles and another 16 percent had three or more.

HOUSING COSTS: The median monthly housing costs for (specified) mortgaged owners was $1,223, (specified) nonmortgaged owners $357, and (specified) renters $809. Twenty-two percent of owners with mortgages, 6 percent of owners without mortgages, and 45 percent of renters in Baltimore County spent 30 percent or more of household income on housing.
